After a sleepless night, I woke up groggy and tired on Sunday morning. I worked at 7:45am, so I was up at 6:30am, had a quick shower, threw together a quick lunch (butternut squash soup with vegetables and crab) and munched down some brown rice rice-crispies with almond milk and a cut up banana.
I shuffled my way over to the elevator where I was greeted by an older gentleman carrying a suitcase. I presume that he was on his way to the airport. “You’re up early” he said to me “you must be on your way to work.” “Yes” I replied, and offered my very best attempt at a smile. “I haven’t gotten up early for work in a long time (he was retired)” he told me, and I smiled politely – still not entirely conscious at this point. As the elevator neared my floor he said “Well, you have something to look forward to.” I gave him a quizzical look. “Retirement” he clarified “only then you have to deal with being old.” I gave an awkward sort of laugh, and then the elevator opened up to my floor and I booted it out of there.
Here was this man, who looked to be in his mid to late eighties, who was essentially telling me, an early 20 something year old woman, that at least she could look forward to retirement. Does anyone else think that this is depressing? What sort of message is that to pass on? No wonder everyone is so screwed up when it comes to money. So many of us have this belief that to make money we need
to get a job, work 40 hours a week, and live for the weekend. What’s the point in getting a job that you hate? It just doesn’t make any logical sense. I have a really hard time believing that this is all there is to live. I’m more inclined to believe that this accepted path, is a lie disguised as a norm that keeps people in a place of mediocrity. When I start working on film sets, I’m going to be jumping out of bed every day with a smile on my face. Why? Because I’ll be doing what I love to do. Actually, let me completely rework that last statement. You will not get what you want out of life unless you get your mind into a place that’s prepared to accept the good things that are coming your way. Therefore, I should be getting up every day as if the reality I just outlined already exists. Live every day as if you already have everything that you could ever want, and everything you ever wanted will come to you.
Don’t live your life waiting for retirement. Start enjoying your life right now!
