Made of Stone poster

I’m in a play!

For the last month, while consecutively rehearsing and performing a play for the Fringe (we just wrapped on Sunday), I have been learning a South Yorkshire dialect and doing endless amount of text analysis for a role that was welcomed into my life by sheer luck. Oh yeah, except that I don’t believe in luck. Luck happens when hard work meets opportunity – and I was prepared.

Here’s what happened (this first part doesn’t actually involve me)

A group of remarkably talented and driven (I think the latter is even more important) individuals got together and decided to put on a play. Their goal was to bring a new level of theatre to Vancouver and inspire a new level of dedication and commitment to story-telling in young actors in the city. The goal was to capture real life on stage – not representations of life. Their mission statement was/is  very much in-line with what I believe.

After hours spent perusing the bookshelf’s of the Vancouver Public Library for the perfect play, they found it: Made of Stone by Leo Butler. The play follows the story of 3 brothers as they work to come to terms with their father’s death. The brothers are all so different, and their very distinct and different relationships with their father influence their every action. The play is daring, provocative, raw, often uncomfortable and occasionally funny. Set in Sheffield (a small city in South Yorkshire, England), this play took guts. Luckily these three actors had guts.

I had already read with the cast at their table read when I filled in for an actor who couldn’t be there. Almost a month later, after an unfortunate series of events (well, not for me), I was cast in the role.

I joined an ensemble cast of 5 other actors and started to get busy.

For a director, the cast had brought on celebrated director Kelly-Ruth Mercier (also one of my coaches from acting school) on to direct the play. K-R was also one of my coaches while in acting school, and it terms out that working hard and making a good impression actually does pay off. I’m still so grateful that she thought of me for the role.

I have an ulterior motive in writing this post.

As a new production company, we are looking for some help financially. We have set up an indigogo page to help with financing and it would be extremely helpful if you had even $5 to send in our direction and help me as I prepare to take to the stage in one of the best roles of my career so far.

Carol, the character I play, is spunky, daring and often impulsive. While Christine is usually relatively quiet and soft spoken, Carol is a little bit louder. So I am going to be a little bit more loud as I express how much this would mean to me.

If you are in Vancouver, you could check out the play yourself.

In closing, thank you for your support as I move forward in my journey. I could have never have gotten to where I am without all of your kind words and encouragement. I hope that I can return the favour!
