I was not expecting to enjoy this experiment. In fact, when I saw that Pam wanted me to put aside two entire hours to play with coat hangers, I put off even doing the experiment until Sunday. I’m so glad that I finally sucked it up and gave this one a shot.
E Squared by Pam Grout — Experiment #3
Theory: You, too, are a field of energy.
I would like to start with a quote from E Squared by Pam Grout:
“Your body is an imposter, a tiny fraction of who you really are. Ninety-nine percent of who you are is invisible and untouchable. “
As a female, I feel the pressure of being a certain size and am ashamed to admit that I brutally beat up on myself after purposefully putting on weight for a role. It’s scary how much of our identity we can box into our physical appearance.
For a character study, I recently read this quote in a book written by a woman who struggled with Bulimia/Nervosa for most of her life. Her words still haunt me today:
“There was a time… when my self worth was entirely contingent upon my ability to starve. A strange equation and an altogether too common belief: ones worth is exponentially increased with one’s incremental disappearance. I had to learn to love the thump of my steps, the implication of weight and presence and taking of space”
– Marya Hornbacher, Wasted: A Memoir
What does all of this have to do with Pam Grout’s third experiment? Well, this experiment is about recognizing and appreciating your place in the universe. It’s about owning your space, asserting what you want, and understanding that you deserve to be abundant and successful. It’s about realizing that you deserve to get what you want. This experiment is about stepping into your own power and learning to “love the thump of [your] step.”
Alex and Twitch’s performance from “So You Think You Can Dance” reminds me of how crazy this whole concept of is. The dance is called “Outta Your Mind.”
We all give off vibrations based on what we think and feel about ourselves. I know that I have the bad habit of having a shrinking vibration when I’m around people who give off an inspiringly high vibration. I’m learning to stand on my own two feet and face their high energy head on with my head held high.
The Experiment
Pam’s third experiment involves two coat hangers, a straw cut in half, and your mind. The goal of the experiment is to control the movement of the coat hangers using your energy. Check out the book to learn how to set this experiment up.
When I first brought the coat hanger contraptions up, they went all over the place. After only a short amount of time they settled in front of me and the fun began. Here’s what I learned:
- When I vocalized exactly what I wanted the coat hangers to do (go right, go left, go back to the middle, bounce), I was more easily able to control their behavior in the beginning.
- When I thought one thing and said another, the coat hangers always behaved according to what I was thinking instead of saying (this one weirded me out).
- When I shook my head all over the place while repeating “stay centered” the coat hangers did not move.
- When I acted as though it was urgent that they move from left to right quickly, they did. AND when suddenly in the middle of this momentum I said to stop… they did.
- Near the end of the experiment I returned to only thinking, and it was just as effective as speaking.
After finishing this experiment I felt so empowered that I immediately sat down and meditated on what I had just witnessed. If your thought and words are powerful enough to move “material” objects, can you imagine the power that something like mantra or affirmations could have?
“At each moment, you mold and shape this energy by your consciousness. You do so with every thought, every intention, every action. How you feel; what you think, believe, and value; and how you live your life affect how the energy flows through you.” (excerpt)
If you do the experiment, let me your results.
I am so grateful to you for introducing this to me!!!! I just love this book and love others who bring this kind of wonderful energy into my life! Thank you and happy to be vibrating at an amazing creative place with you!
Love your insights too- I bought 5 books to give to my friends!!!!
Best regards-
Meg
PS – since you seem to be pretty adept at blogging , I was wondering if I could ask you how you cut your post so that people have to click into read post to get the rest of the post? I would like to be more blog savvy! Thanks again!
That’s so awesome that you bought five copies for your friends! Are you doing the exercises too? I’m pretty excited about the 4th experiment. Full of anticipation!
The format you mentioned is just part of the design I chose for the blog. Unfortunately I’m not so good at HTML. You can see from the designs which ones will do that for you! Thanks for following my blog!!
Hey guys I’m a bit struggling w 3# experiment.
I read the direction in the book but I’m quite confused..
Can you pls help?
Cheers
Hi Tatiana! I’m sorry I just saw your comment now. Basically you need to unwind two coat hangers so they’re straight, then bend the ends and put half a straw there so they they will swing in circles in front of you. Then… you have to control it with your mind!! Sounds super crazy whacky, BUT IT WORKS!
Which end do you put the straw on, the end you’re holding or the other one? It hasn’t worked for me no matter where I put the straws. The book says to male an L shape so that one end is about 5″ and the other end is about 12″. That would be a 17″ wire. When I untwist my hangers, they are over 2 feet long. They are just regular wire hangers. I don’t get it.

Ok…in order to do this experiment, I actually had to buy the book on my Kindle. I am in the process of reading it, but tomorrow I pull out two wire hangers from the closet, which, by the way, I happened to purge of old clothes today! I actually have some empty hangers now! I also happen to have a straw from a cup that I got at the movies. I very rarely drink soda, but a friend bought me a cup that is refillable for the whole year, so I brought it home.
Synchronicity.
completely synchronistic! I love it.
Alrighty…I did the experiment. Very interesting, bordering on creepy. I followed the instructions in the book, and the tips did turn in when I focused on some junk that happened at work. When I visualized how that junk is now clearing and actually turning around, the wires spread apart! I then tried to do a bit of “command performance” with them, and I began to feel that they were really “listening” when I said, “Ok… let’s get parallel and face front now. And then move it on over to the right.” That’s where it got a bit creepy because after about a minute with each command, they moved where directed! I have to try it again (several times) to make sure that my hands didn’t inadvertently tip to one side or the other to make them move!
Hey, I’m sorry that I haven’t responded until now! I didn’t want to respond on the other blog, because my comment would have been lost and I’ve been working hard to get this new site up and running. I found this experiment creepy too! What happened when you tried it again?
I’m interested. Can we be sure that it’s not your brain giving into confirmation bias, sort of controlling your hands without telling you? What would happen were you to do this by putting the hangers in something fixed, like two parallel lead pipes jutting out of a wall or something?
