A friend of mine from Fredericton, New Brunswick will be undergoing a double lung transplant in the next few months and is raising money for the operation. She hasn’t been able to work for awhile, and will be even less able to work after the operation. The money will go towards medication and cost of living as she recovers.
Here’s what she has to say:
Hi my name is Meghann Palmer. I’m from Woodstock, New Brunswick, Canada. I just turned thirty in January. I have a fiance named Jonathan. I have three nieces and a little nephew. I love dogs especially my pug named Puggles and my Pomeranian named Rocky. I enjoy reading, kayaking, going for walks, going to the beach, knitting, camping and going to the movies. I am, for the most part, a normal young woman; however, I was born with cystic fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a complex disease but it affects mainly the respiratory and digestive systems. Cystic fibrosis is fatal; there is no cure. I struggle to breathe everyday. I take at least forty pills a day to help with digestion and daily lung treatments that can take on average four to six hours a day depending on how I am feeling. Despite all of this, I have managed to attend nursing school, obtain a Bachelor’s of Arts, and a Bachelor’s of Social Work from St. Thomas University. Since my graduation from the social work program, my health began to deteriorate. I am averaging around seven to eight hospitalizations annually that last from two to three weeks each. I was employed at Tim Hortons working part time but with my health regimen and hospitalizations, employment became near impossible. I quit my job in October 2012.
My lung specialist has informed me that there may not be anything more the CF team can do for me at this point. It is time for me to begin planning for a double lung transplant. Lung transplants are preformed in Toronto. I will live in Toronto for a period of time with my support person while I wait for a new set of lungs. I am fundraising for living expenses, transportation, and medications. With my new set of lungs, I am hoping that I will be able to work as a social worker, run a half marathon and obtain my Master’s degree.
I am daughter, sister, granddaughter, fiance, friend, niece, aunt and cousin. My loved ones want more time on this earth with me. I certainly want more time with them but I am running out. Even though a double lung transplant will not cure my cystic fibrosis, it may give me a few extra years to live. Ultimately, if I am fortunate enough to receive a transplant, I want to spend the additional time with the ones I love. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
