Smile. Today I learned how important it is to genuinely smile and show another kindness. Not only will it make you feel good, but you never know where that smile or act of kindness could lead. A couple of weeks ago, a new student was introduced to my acting class and we were told he might be joining us. I can only imagine how scary that would be. Two months into the program, everyone in my class has already formed a special bond, and now this new person is met with the added pressure of trying to incorporate themselves into an already formed group dynamic. It’s like moving to a new elementary school halfway through the school year. I had to do that when I was in grade 4 and it sucked. Maybe that’s why I could relate to him, and maybe that’s why I felt the need to make sure he felt included and comfortable. The more I spoke to this new person the better I felt as I realized I was making a difference.
I completely forgot about all of this until today I ran into the student again (he decided against joining the class for scheduling reasons) and was met with a great big smile. He wanted to thank me for being so nice to him on that day, and for going out of my way to help him. He asked me if I had an agent yet or if I was auditioning? I told him that I didn’t and that I was waiting until I felt completely ready. He then told me that, when I felt ready, I should send him my info and he’d pass it along to his agent. It just so happens, that this person is represented by one of the top agencies in the city. Wow. What are the chances of this happening?
Here’s something to remember: be nice to everyone no matter what. Do this, and you will not only improve the lives of others, but yours as well.
Some food for thought.
