In Everything You Need to Know to Feel Go(o)d, Candace P. Pert  explores the connection between our body and our minds. There was a very interesting section in the book that I would like to share with you (actors will find this section especially interesting). It’s about multiple personality disorder:

“The physiological differences [between each personality] can be so extreme that one personality might be a cat fancier while another is allergic to felines. When the allergy-prone personality is dominant, all the symptoms are exhibited, but when the cat fancier is in charge, the person is symptom free.”

Now, think about this quote. I used to have really bad allergies to pollen, dust mites, several different types of trees, etc – but in the last year my allergies (allergies I’ve had since I was a toddler) have virtually disappeared. I mean, my waste basket used to be continuously overflowing with tissues, and now I don’t remember the last time I blew my nose. Without any external help, my body heeled itself. That’s not what this quote is talking about. The above quote is saying that the body has the ability to change instantaneously. This means, that anything you say about your body health wise is only true because you believe it to be true. If the body has the ability to morph so easily, the only reason we don’t all have perfectly functioning bodies is because we don’t think it’s possible. Even after sharing that it is possible, it’s still a difficult concept to accept.

“The fact that sub-personalities such as these have been shown to have different brain scans is less interesting than the fact that they truly look physically distinct… the muscles of their faces are held and shaped differently from one personality to the next. Films of patients taken by psychologists show that these whole-body “state changes” occur instantaneously during transition”

This is especially interesting to me as an actor. Sometimes it seems so difficult to become a different human being, but your body does (and if your brave enough… your mind) have the ability to transform itself into another identity. This section proves to me how malleable we actually are. You can literally be anything that you want to be. I would be willing to get that the above quote has something to do with how homely looking children sometimes grow up to be absolutely stunning adults. I think there’s more to this than “Oh, they just grew into their bodies.” I believe that beautiful/confident people are that way, because they believe in that reality for themselves.

“My [the author’s] theory is that there’s a normal state of MPD [Multiple Personality Disorder], not just a pathological state… Think of a time when you’ve been angry or humiliated and acted in a way that wasn’t “you,” yet you couldn’t change your reaction – even though you wanted to. [The author] observed [her] sub-personalities for years, noticing how one would frequently block the intentions and desires of the other, sabotaging efforts that had to do with success, money, and relationships.”

This truly brings new meaning to the statement “I’m battling myself.” I mean, I feel like I’m constantly going back and fourth between a woman who believes in herself, a woman who is scared out of her mind and who just wants to hide, and a happy medium between the two. When I’m in one state, I look at the other states and laugh: what an idiot I was then, I think to my self. Have you ever experienced something similar?

“From his observations of MDP patients, Allison coined the term inner self helper to apply to the one personality he observed that not only knew all the other aspects, but was also aware of events that none of the other personalities could possibly know, such as things that had occurred before birth… I think that the key to… feeling good is to train yourself to come from the highest possible “observer” – the sub-personality that’s most closely associated with the divine, or the higher self. The best way to get there?… meditation.”
